Commonly Used JIS standard Steel Grades for Building Structures

Introduction:

Jindalai Steel Group is a leading supplier of steel plates for various applications. With a wide range of products including Hot Rolled Steel Plate, Cold Rolled Steel Plate, Hot Rolled Patterned Steel Plate, and Tinplate, we have established long-term partnerships with renowned steel mills to ensure that our products meet international standards. Our commitment to delivering superior products and exceptional service has made us a leader in the steel trading industry. In this blog, we will explore commonly used carbon steel and structural steel grades in Japan for building structures.

1. Ordinary Structural Steel Grades in Japan

Ordinary structural steel in Japanese steel grades consists of three parts. The first part represents the material, where “S” stands for steel and “F” represents iron. The second part denotes different shapes and types, such as “P” for plates, “T” for tubes, and “K” for tools. The third part represents the characteristic number, usually the minimum tensile strength. For example: SS400 – the first S represents steel, the second S represents “structure”, 400 is the lower limit tensile strength of 400MPa, and the overall represents ordinary structural steel with a tensile strength of 400MPa.

2. SPHC – The Versatile Hot-Rolled Steel Plate Grade

SPHC is an abbreviation for Steel Plate, Heat, and Commercial. It signifies hot-rolled steel plates and steel strips that find widespread use due to their versatility. These steel plates are commonly employed in various construction projects, including building structures.

3. SPHD – Stamping Applications of Hot-Rolled Steel Plates

SPHD grade indicates hot-rolled steel plates and steel strips specifically designed for stamping applications. This grade imparts excellent formability, making it suitable for manufacturing complex components used in automotive and machinery industries.

4. SPHE – Deep Drawing Applications of Hot-Rolled Steel Plates

SPHE grade represents hot-rolled steel plates and strips used for deep drawing purposes. Its high formability and superior surface finish make it ideal for manufacturing intricate parts, such as automotive body components and household appliances.

5. SPCC – Widely Used Cold-Rolled Carbon Steel Sheets

SPCC grade refers to commonly used cold-rolled carbon steel sheets and strips. It is equivalent to China’s Q195-215A grade. The “C” in SPCC stands for Cold. To indicate that the tensile test is guaranteed, “T” is added at the end of the grade to represent SPCCT.

6. SPCD – Cold-Rolled Carbon Steel Sheets for Stamping Applications

SPCD is the grade for cold-rolled carbon steel sheets and strips used in stamping applications. It is equivalent to China’s 08AL (13237) high-quality carbon structural steel, known for its excellent formability and strength.

7. SPCE – Cold-Rolled Carbon Steel Sheets for Deep Drawing Applications

SPCE indicates cold-rolled carbon steel sheets and strips used for deep drawing purposes. It is equivalent to China’s 08AL (5213) deep drawing steel. When non-timeliness needs to be ensured, “N” is added at the end of the grade to denote SPCEN.

8. JIS Mechanical Structure Steel Grade Representation Method

S+carbon content+letter code (C, CK), in which the carbon content is expressed by the intermediate value × 100. The letter C: represents carbon. K: represents carburizing steel. For example, the carbon content of carbon rolled plate S20C is 0.18-0.23%.
Quenching and tempering codes of cold-rolled carbon steel sheets and steel strips: annealed state is A, standard quenching and tempering is S, 1/8 hardness is 8, 1/4 hardness is 4, 1/2 hardness is 2, and hardness is 1.

Surface processing code: D for matte finish rolling and B for bright finish rolling. For example, SPCC-SD represents standard quenched and tempered, matte finish rolling, generally used cold-rolled carbon sheets. Another example is SPCCT-SB, which represents cold-rolled carbon sheets with standard tempering and bright processing, requiring guaranteed mechanical properties.
