The difference between LSAW Pipe and SSAW tube

Longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe (LSAW pipe), also known as SAWL pipe. It takes steel plate as raw material, which is shaped by forming machine, and then submerged arc welding is carried out on both sides. Through this process, the longitudinal submerged arc welded steel pipe will obtain excellent ductility, welding toughness, uniformity, plasticity and good sealing performance.

The diameter range of longitudinal submerged arc welding pipeline is larger than that of resistance welding, usually 16 inches to 60 inches, 406mm to 1500 mm. It has good high pressure resistance and low temperature corrosion resistance.

Application of LSAW pipe

It has been widely used in oil and gas pipelines, especially pipelines with large diameter, thick wall, high strength and long distance. At the same time, according to API specification, LSAW pipeline (SAWL pipeline or JCOE pipeline) is specially used for large-scale oil and gas transportation, and is suitable for pipelines crossing cities, oceans and urban areas. This is the level 1 and level 2 area.

 

Manufacturing technology of SSAW pipe (HSAW pipe)

SSAW Pipe, also known as HSAW PIPE, has a spiral welding line. It adopts the same welding technology as longitudinal submerged arc welding. The difference is that SSAW pipes are spirally welded, while LSAW pipes are longitudinally welded. The manufacturing process is to roll the steel strip, so that the rolling direction forms an angle with the direction of the center of the pipeline, and it is formed and welded, so the weld is spiral.

 

 

Size range and characteristics of SSAW pipe (HSAW pipe)

The diameter of SSAW pipes ranges from 20 inches to 100 inches, and 406 mm to 2540 mm.. Its advantage is that we can obtain SSAW pipes with different diameters on the same size steel strip, which is widely used in raw material steel strip, and the initial stress should be avoided in the weld, which has good stress-bearing performance.

The disadvantage is that the physical size is not good, and the weld length is longer than the pipe length, which is easy to cause cracks, pores, slag inclusion, local welding, welding force under tension and other defects.

 

Application of SSAW PIPE

For the oil and gas pipeline system, but in the petroleum design code, SSAW pipeline /HSAW pipeline can only be used in Grade 3 and Grade 4 areas. Building structure, water transportation and sewage treatment, thermal industry, architecture, etc.

LSAW tube has better performance than SSAW tube.

 

As mentioned above, the specifications of both SAW tubes define that SSAW tubes will be used in less important fields. So far, the United States, Japan and Germany are all opposed to SSAW pipelines, and there is no suggestion to use SSAW pipelines in key pipelines. Some pipelines use SSAW pipeline. Russia has few pipelines in SSAW, and they have formulated strict implementation terms. For China, due to historical factors, most key pipelines in China still use SSAW pipelines.

 

Compared with seamless pipe and ERW pipe. ERW and SAW pipelines are mainly used for oil and gas transportation. Seamless steel pipes are mainly used for oil and gas drilling and exploration.
