Overview of 321 Stainless Steel Pipe
As a modified version of SS304, stainless steel 321 (SS321) is a stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a titanium addition of at least 5 times the carbon content. The titanium addition reduces or prevents the sensitization of carbide precipitation during welding and in services at the temperature range of 425-815°C. It also improves the some of the properties at elevated temperatures. SS321 provides outstanding resistance to oxidation and corrosion and has good creep strength. It is used primarily in oil refinery equipment, pressure vessel piping, radiant super heaters, bellews, and high-temperature heat treatment equipment.

Fatigue Strength of 321 Stainless Steel Tube
In dynamic applications, fatigue strength is also important to consider. And in this respect 321 SS has a slight advantage over 304 SS. Fatigue or endurance limits (strength in bending) of austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition are about one-half the tensile strength.Typical tensile and endurance limits for these alloys (annealed) are presented in the table below:

Weldability of 321 Stainless Steel Tube
SS321 and TP321 has excellent weldability, no preheating is required. The filling material needs to have similar composition but higher alloy content. Liquation cracking in heat affected zone: low energy input. Fine grain size. Ferrite ≥ 5%.
Recommended filler metals are SS 321, 347, and 348. Electrode is E347 or E308L [service temperature < 370 °C (700 °F)].
Applications of 321 Stainless Steel Tube
Type 321, 321H and TP321 can be used in places where solution treatment after welding is not possible, such as steam lines and superheater pipes and exhaust systems in reciprocating engines and gas turbines with temperatures ranging from 425 to 870 °C (800 to 1600 °F). And fuel injection lines and hydraulic systems for aircraft and aerospace vehicles.
